Case Study 1, Optimizing Intake Information to assist the interdisciplinary team assessment.
Prior to admission to the Skilled Nursing Facility setting, an intake assessment should be attained on each resident. In this scenario we learn how having the correct information helped a skilled nursing facility treat the resident, not the RUG-III level of that resident.
Prior to admission it was determined that the following nursing items were noted. This resident was weaned off TPN two days prior to admission. The resident would be remaining on Tube Feeding during the SNF stay with an associated diagnosis of aphasia. The resident received IV antibiotics 7 days prior to admission for cellulitis, which has since resolved. The resident has been attending therapy at the hospital, but is doing poorly due to weakness and deconditioning, and was only able to do about 20 minutes of PT and OT each day. The resident is unable to do any ADL's without 'MAX' assist of 2 in the hospital. The admission is planned for the SNF after the resident has attempted therapy in the hospital that day.
This information is put into the FutuRUG Intake Calculator (for urban facilities), and the following information is received: Click to see more information about the generated intake report

The therapy manager reviews the case from the reports given, from the FutuRUG Intake, and decides that they will first see the resident and provide Rehab Medium level service.
In this case study, the facility is able to pick day 5 as the 5-day MDS assessment reference day, with a RUG of RMX. The resident then is not required to do therapy twice in one day, the day of admission, allowing the resident to rest.
In this scenario the facility was also able to optimize reimbursement by picking the correct 5-day assessment reference date.

Some helpful information about the FutuRUG Intake.
The FutuRUG intake solution will help the interdisciplinary team plan for the necessity for skilled therapy during the first few days of the admission. The intake information will also help to determine what acuity the resident will have upon their admission. This information can be crucial to determining staffing needs for each resident admitted.
The purpose of having this information handy is attempting to treat the resident to archive a therapy RUG level when they might not be physically ready to do a higher level may be detrimental to a residents well being. The best scenario is to have as much information as you can get so you can treat the resident to the best of your ability.
Overall, when therapy and nursing are optimized, financial benefit is the result of the optimizing process. With ONE correctly done and utilized FutuRUG intake, the program will pay for itself.
